Reception week beginning 30.01.17

This week we will be continuing our Penguin theme and sharing and recording what we have learnt about penguins.

We will also be learning about what life is like in the Polar Regions.

We would like to say a big thank you for all of your support at home with your child's penguin homework - we have been blown away by your efforts! The children have taken great pride in sharing their homework to their class and what they have learnt about penguins.

Literacy Focus: -
This week we will  be modelling to the children how information can be retrieved from books and computers and we will be making a class non-fiction book all about penguins. The children will all  contribute a page to the book writing information which they have learnt about penguins.

We will begin our week by watching the video below: -

It looks like a penguin has teeth!

Phonics Focus: -
This week the children will continue to learn letter sounds which are digraphs (a digraph is 2 letters which make 1 sound. The sounds which the children will be learning this week are, ur, ow, and oi. For help in how to say each sound correctly please visit the phonics website http://mrthorne.com/ which has short videos which you and your child can watch at home. The children are particularly enjoying the "Geraldine The Giraffe" videos in school!

This week the children will be making and bringing home 'tricky word' igloos! Tricky words are words which cannot be sounded out correctly. The only way these words can be read (and spelt) correctly is by learning them and having plenty of practise. The tricky words which have been introduced to the children so far from the Letters and Sounds programme are: - to, the, no, go, I, into, we, me, be, was, my, no, go.  Please help your child to learn these tricky words at home. We will be assessing the children on the tricky words the week before the half term holiday.

Ladybirds WB: 23.01.2017

We began the week meeting our penguin friends inspired from the text ' Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers.

On our writing table we had a go at making lost posters.

And a list of things we might bring on our penguin adventures.

Here Zac has made his own penguin out of playdogh.

Vivienne created a scene with the boy and penguin about to go in their boat on an adventure.

We watched a simple clip of how to paint a penguin and got creative at the art table.

Here Maddy is supporting Amelie in her next step of where to place the eyes.

This week we have been reinforcing and challenging ourself to record addition number sentences, by rolling a dice.
We use the dots to support counting altogether (=)

Great use of dots to support your counting Charlie.

In PE we got really active and has some team races. Running around the cone and passing our ball to our team mate.

We worked on speeding up our team, by looking where our team runner was so that the next person was ready to receive the ball and leave the start line quickly.

Great team spirit was shown by all as everyone cheered on there team members.
Ending our session with a warm down and finally being mindful with some relaxing music.

As it is nearly Chinese New Year, in ICT we have been using our mouse skills to click and colour in a dragon.

We even had a go at tying our name on our work.

Adam made a boat from construction materials for our lost penguin.

Reception week beginning: - 23.01.17

This weeks learning activities will be based upon the story,

"Lost and Found" by Oliver Jeffers

The story centres round a boy who finds a penguin on his doorstep and his journey taking the penguin home to the South Pole. For our literacy activities the children will be encouraged to think of and write about an adventure which they would like to go on if they found a penguin.

We also enjoyed drawing our penguin adventures on large pieces of paper on the carpet. The children had some fantastic imaginative ideas.

On Monday a penguin appeared in our classroom! We made Lost posters for the penguin and also had a Lost and Found Office to answer and record calls about the penguin!

Reception Writer of the Week!
 Well done to Henry!

Group Reading: -
It is our intention for all of the children to read with an adult at least once over a fortnightly period. Comments related to your child's reading will be written at the back of your child's Reading Record Book. The reading games and books are aimed to develop the children's phonic skills, discussion, comprehension, book vocabulary and enjoyment. The Oxford Reading Tree scheme books will be read alongside additional stories, poems and non-fiction which will appeal to young readers. Please comment in your child's Reading Record when they have read at home with you. Reading books are changed in school on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

PE Session: -
In the hall we are learning to move around safely travelling in different ways and into a space. Caterpillar class got changed in record timing this week - all changed in 10 minutes. We are going to see if we can beat this time every week!

We also enjoyed joining in with the Penguin Bop!

Creative Activities: -
Our creative activities at the art table will be linked to the story, "Lost and Found" and our week will begin with the children making penguins.

We made two penguins together as a class using Mod Roc materials.

We made moving pictures! Using oil pastels we drew a colourful background of where we would like to go on our penguin adventure. We then cut around a penguin template and stuck it to a lolly stick so the penguin could move across the picture.

The penguin is going to the beach

The penguin is at a tropical island and ate coconuts.

He is going to an island on holiday.

ICT Suite: -
On Friday the children will be learning all about Chinese New Year. In the ICT session we used the mouse to click on colours and patterns of our choice to decorate a Chinese dragon!

Please don't forget the children's Penguin homework needs to be returned to school this week (week beginning 23.01.17) ready for their learning activities next week.
