Week beginning 01.05.17

This week's learning activities will be based on the story of,

Jack and the Beanstalk.

Literacy Focus: - In preparation for the children writing their very own beanstalk adventures this week they will be looking at story elements through the story, "Jack and the Beanstalk". The children will be encouraged to identify who the main characters are in the story, the story settings and also events at the beginning, middle and end of the story.
Maths Focus: - This week the children will be encouraged to use language related to size and measure. For example - long, longer, short, shorter. The giant will leave the children his footprints in the classroom and they will have to find objects which are longer and shorter than his feet. Using non standard measures the children will also identify how long their feet are.

Our week in Caterpillar Class: -
We went on a hunt around the school corridor to find objects which were longer and shorter than the giants feet.
The book is longer

In groups we  recorded what we found out onto post its and shared our findings.

We measured our own footprints! We drew around our shoe and then found out how many cubes long our footprint was.

Ryan is measuring a variety of objects using the cubes.

We painted pictures of the main characters from the "Jack and the Beanstalk" story and described them.

We enjoyed retelling the story through small world play.

As the castle is one of the settings in the "Jack and the Beanstalk" story throughout the week we have made castles using different construction materials. We labelled and photographed our finished models.

We made castles using Shreddies!

Using a pastel and watercolours we drew and painted a castle. We all enjoyed this activity and we're very pleased with our finished pictures.

We made our own beanstalks using spaghetti, Cheerios and green paper which we cut into leaf shapes!

Our week in Ladybird Class:

We began the week by being introduced to our new story Jack and the Beanstalk.

We made beanstalks.

And drew beanstalks; here is Frankie and Charlie’s beanstalk with a cloud at the top.
‘We know there is as castle at the top so let’s make one…’ – Charlie C and Frankie

‘This is the castle that is on the top of the beanstalk and inside lives a big, ugly, hungry giant.’ – Frankie and Charlie C.

Ava and Emily are drawing some of the characters from the story.

‘This is the boy – Jack, and this is his mum.  She wasn’t happy when he brought home the beans.  But in the end it was ok.’ – Ava.

For our maths focus we looked at measure and using the vocabulary, long, longer and short, shorter.  The children used a template of The Giant’s foot to find object that were longer or shorter than the foot.

Vivieen using the vocabulary for long and short in a game on the interactive board.

We also had a go at drawing around our own foot and used cubes to measure how long it was and later compared it to our friends.

Amelie - 'Ive made a snail with bluetac.'

Kamil made a space blaster.

Lots of great reading going on.

Using the computer to create our own designs.

Working on our stories in class.
'I can write sentences now that I know my sounds.' - Zac.
