Reception week beginning 06.02.17

This week our theme is,

Machines

We will be beginning two weeks of learning activities based on the book,
"The Story Machine" by Tom McLaughlin

The story begins with a boy named Elliot finding a machine and this is where (this week) we will stop reading the book to the children.

We will begin the week by encouraging the children to identify machines which they know and are familiar to them and will be providing them with old machines which they can explore and take apart. We will then encourage the children to use their imaginations to think of what sort of machine they would like to find and what they would do with it. We will also encourage them to make machines using junk modelling materials.

Phonics Focus: -
This week the children will continue to learn letter sounds which are trigraphs (a trigraph is 3 letters which make 1 sound. The sounds which the children will be learning this week are, ear, air, and ure.
For help in how to say each sound correctly please visit the phonics website http://mrthorne.com/ which has short videos which you and your child can watch at home. The children are particularly enjoying the "Geraldine The Giraffe" videos in school!

Tricky words: -
The children have really enjoyed singing along to the 'Tricky Words' song at school. After the half term holiday we will be testing the children to see if they can read the Phase 2 tricky words from the Letters and Sound programme which are: - to, the, I, no, go, into. We will then move onto the Phase 3 tricky words which are: - he, she, we, me, be, you, are, her, was, all, they, my. Please help your child to learn these tricky words at home remember the only way these words can be read (and spelt) correctly is by learning them and having plenty of practise.

Maths focus: -
This week we will be using number lines to help the children to understand our number system - counting and using number names from 1 to 20, finding one more than a number and counting on to add 2 single digit numbers.

A one more than  number song: -

Counting on to add 2 single digit numbers using a number line is explained below: -

Internet Safety Day: -
This Tuesday (07.02.17) is Safer Internet Day. We will be teaching the children how to stay safe online using resources from the Childnet International website. The children will listen to an e-safety story and will join in with Mummy Penguin's song and follow the adventures of Smartie the Penguin as he learns how to stay safe on the internet. For advice and more information about how to teach your child about e-safety please follow the link below: -

PE session:
In our PE session we used our imaginations to pretend we had 3 different machines - a time machine, a flying machine and a morphing machine. We used movements to create and act out different scenarios.

We travelled back in time in a time machine to Dinosaur World and became T-Rexes!

We flew in a flying machine to a racing track and became racing drivers!

We all stepped into a morphing machine and became a Prince or Princess.

We used our imaginations to think of and make / write about a machine that we would like.

I have made a picture of a machine of me. It tidies up my bedroom!

I have made a coffee making machine.

I have made a machine of myself and it does all the jobs!

Bailey made this fantastic cleaning up machine at home!

ICT Session: -
In the ICT suite we drew pictures of our chosen machine on the program 2Simple.
