Bumble Bee Class week beginning 21.11.16

This week at Nursery is Road Safety Week.

This week is National Road Safety Week. Our learning activities will be based on the themes of: -

What's On The Road?
  • For children to know what a road is, what traffic is and that traffic exists in many forms.
  • For children to understand that traffic can be dangerous.
  • For children to know the rules for keeping safe near traffic.

The children had a close look at a real car. They talked about what the car felt like and what it was made of.

    "It's hard"
    "It's cold"
    "It's made of metal"
"The windows are made of glass"

The children compared the properties of the car to the feel of their tummies.
    "My tummy is squishy"
"It would really hurt if a car hit you, you might have to go to hospital".

After looking at the car, the children had great fun washing it!

Some children noticed shapes on the car.
    Circles.

    And a triangle.

Stop, Look and Listen.

For children to understand what stop, look and listen means.

For children to know that they should only cross roads when holding a carer’s hand and should never cross a road on their own.

The children used the road and props outside to practice crossing the road safely.

Luckily there was a friendly police officer on hand to help keep everybody safe!

The children have painted traffic lights and made collage zebra crossings.

They have drawn some fantastic detailed road pictures, and used them as a base for small world play.

Information for parents about how to help keep children safe on the road can be found on the Think! Education website http://think.direct.gov.uk/education/early-years-and-primary/parents/3-to-5s/

Our number focus this week: -
Our number focus this week is the number 6.

Numicon: -
This week we will also be introducing Numicon to the children. Numicon is a multi-sensory approach to mathematics and through imagery uses patterns to represent  number. The patterns are structured so number relationships can be seen and experienced and encourages an understanding of numbers and their relationships.

Some examples of Numicon activities can be seen on the clip below: -

Here are some of the Numicon activities that the children have taken part in this week.

Using different pieces to completely fill the board.

Carefully following a template to complete a picture.

Rolling the correct number of playdough balls to fit in the pieces.
