Caterpillar Class week beginning 02/01/17

Literacy Focus:-
This week we recapped on the Phase 2 and Phase 3 single sounds which we have previously learnt. The children were encouraged to link sounds to letters and say letter sounds at speed.

Our adult focus activities focussed on the children identifying and recording initial sounds in words and then segmenting words to record simple CVC words using a picture cue. Our extension activities included writing CVC words in the context of a caption or sentence remembering to use finger spaces in between words.

An example of blending and segmenting letter sounds to read words can be seen below.

Maths focus: -
This week our maths focus was 2D shape. The children named common 2D shapes - square, triangle, rectangle and circle. They were also encouraged to use mathematical terms to describe them, identifying how many sides and corners each shape has. The children all made a Shape Monster and described what shapes they used to make it.

A circle for his eye. A triangle shape for his face and square teeth.

I have used a circle and a rectangle for his mouth. He is called Henry.

Circles for three eyes, triangle teeth and a square body.

The children all enjoyed watching this shape song: -

Encourage your child to identify 2D shapes in their environment and use words to describe them. Or play guess the shape game, for example, "I have 4 corners, I have 4 straight sides, I have 2 long sides and 2 short sides. What shape am I?"
