Caterpillar class week beginning 16.01.17

This week our learning activities will be based around the theme,

It is Winter!

Literacy Focus: -
For our literacy activities the children will be encouraged to think of and write words linked to Winter. Extension activities will include the children writing an extended sentence about Winter.

At the Writing Area we sequenced 4 pictures of how to build a snowman.

Phonics Focus: -
This week the children will continue to learn letter sounds which are digraphs and trigraphs (a digraph is 2 letters which make 1 sound, a trigraph is 3 letters which makes 1 sound). The sounds which the children will be learning this week are, ai, ee, igh, and oa. For help in how to say each sound correctly please visit the phonics website http://mrthorne.com/ which has short videos which you and your child can watch at home. The children are particularly enjoying the "Geraldine The Giraffe" videos in school!

Group Reading: -
Last week at school we began small group reading tasks with the children. It is our intention for all of the children to read with an adult at least once over a fortnightly period. Comments related to your child's reading will be written at the back of your child's Reading Record Book. The reading games and books are aimed to develop the children's phonic skills, discussion, comprehension, book vocabulary and enjoyment. The Oxford Reading Tree scheme books will be read alongside additional stories, poems and non-fiction which will appeal to young readers.

Maths Focus: -
This week the children will be encouraged to find the total number of items in two groups by counting all of them. We will be using dominoes to make the activities visual and interactive for the children. The children will also record their work in a number sentence using the + (add) and = (equals) sign.

Domino car park - we counted the total number of spots on the domino and then parked them in the correct numbered car park space.

Using dominoes to record addition number sentences.

You could support this learning at home by encouraging your child to count 2 groups of objects  to find the total of number of objects. For example counting the number of knives and forks on the dinner table. Also model and encourage your child to use language related to addition, for example, how many? add, altogether, and total.

Creative activities: -
We made a winter collage on a silver plate. We had to make sure our collage included a winter picture which we had cut around from an old Christmas card.

We made snowmen using play dough using and other materials. We photographed our finished snowman using an iPad.

We enjoyed making snowflakes by threading beads onto a pipe cleaner.

We made our very own icicles by moulding tin foil into an icicle shape and then dipping it into glue and then rolling it in glitter.

We made our own frosty pictures inspired by the story, "Jack Frost".

Snowman paintings using cotton buds to paint.

ICT Session: -
In the ICT suite we had to make a snowman. We used the mouse to click, hold and drag objects. To play the game at home please follow this link: -
